Senate gives MDAs one-week ultimatum to submit 2018 budget
By Henry Umoru
ABUJA—THE Senate yesterday gave a one week ultimatum to Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, to submit details of their 2018 budget proposals for consideration.
According to the Senate, failure to adhere to this, it will have no other option than take other necessary legislative actions.
Speaking yesterday in Abuja during plenary, Senate President Bukola Saraki said, “if after one week the MDAS do not comply, Senate will have no option than to take other necessary legislative actions. It is not as if we don’t know what to do, we will give them one week.”
Resolution of the Senate was sequel to a point of order raised by the Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan.
Senator Lawan said budgets of all MDAs must be presented to the senate to be considered alongside the one presented by President Muhammedu Buhari in 2017.
According to Lawan, only the Nigeria Communications Commission, NCC, had presented what was required so far.
He said: “I came on this particular order because of budgets of the agencies of Federal Government. The president submitted to the national budget as well as the summary of the budgets of the agencies. By so doing, he has completed his work. What is required of the agencies is for them to present details of their agencies.
“Mr President my office has been working closely with the office of Senator Ita Enang. We have insisted that the details of the budget must be presented to the senate so that it would be considered alongside the 2018 budget and be passed as quickly as it can and together.”
